K-8 Promotion, Retention, and Graduation Requirements

General Policies for K-8

  • Attendance: Students must complete a minimum of 180 instructional days to qualify for promotion.
  • Special Education: Students with disabilities follow individualized plans to ensure equitable learning opportunities.
  • Parent Involvement: Schools encourage active communication between teachers and families to support student success.

Elementary Level (K-6)

The Virgin Islands Board of Education establishes promotion and retention policies to ensure students receive a strong educational foundation.

Guiding Principles:

  • Students progress at different rates, and multiple factors, including cognitive ability, social development, and work habits, are considered for promotion.
  • Early intervention is key; struggling students should receive support by the second marking period.
  • Parents are actively involved in decisions regarding their child’s academic progress.
  • Teachers must provide a variety of assessments and document student progress.

Promotion Policies:

  • A student must complete at least 70% of grade-level skills and score at least 70% on competency exams.
  • Kindergarten students are not subject to retention limits, but students in grades 1-6 can only be retained once.

  • A+ (98-100), A (94-97), A- (90-93)
  • B+ (87-89), B (84-86), B- (80-83)
  • C+ (77-79), C (74-76), C- (70-73)

Middle School (Grades 7-8)

Students in grades 7 and 8 must demonstrate competency in core subjects to advance.

Promotion Criteria:

  • Students must pass all core subjects, including English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and required electives.
  • If a student fails a required subject, they must either attend summer school or retake the course in the following year.
  • Grade placement considers academic performance, attendance, and standardized test scores.
