K-8 Promotion, Retention, and Graduation Requirements
General Policies for K-8
- Attendance: Students must complete a minimum of 180 instructional days to qualify for promotion.

Elementary Level (K-6)
The Virgin Islands Board of Education establishes promotion and retention policies to ensure students receive a strong educational foundation.
Guiding Principles:
- Students progress at different rates, and multiple factors, including cognitive ability, social development, and work habits, are considered for promotion.
- Early intervention is key; struggling students should receive support by the second marking period.
- Parents are actively involved in decisions regarding their child’s academic progress.
- Teachers must provide a variety of assessments and document student progress.
Promotion Policies:
- A student must complete at least 70% of grade-level skills and score at least 70% on competency exams.
- Kindergarten students are not subject to retention limits, but students in grades 1-6 can only be retained once.

Middle School (Grades 7-8)
Students in grades 7 and 8 must demonstrate competency in core subjects to advance.
Promotion Criteria:
- Students must pass all core subjects, including English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and required electives.
- If a student fails a required subject, they must either attend summer school or retake the course in the following year.
- Grade placement considers academic performance, attendance, and standardized test scores.
